Residence types on Kuwait job ads
OnKuwait is for Kuwaiti citizens and expats. Only some listings say “visa 18” or “18 transferable”. This page explains that wording on an ad. It does not mean the whole board is visa-18-only. It is not legal advice.
This site is not visa 18 only
A Kuwaiti citizen can apply where the role fits, with no residence number. An expat may hold 18, 20, 22, 14 or a family residence. The visa field on a listing is optional. Read each ad.
Why the number 18 shows up on some ads
In the local job market, “18” usually means a work residence tied to a sponsor (the current employer). An ad that asks for visa 18 almost always wants someone already in Kuwait, whose sponsorship can be transferred after both sides agree — not someone flying in tomorrow.
You will also see “Ahli”, “transferable”, or “inside Kuwait only”. Those phrases point the same way: a local hire is faster than bringing someone from abroad.
What the ad does not prove
Typing “visa 18” in a listing does not prove the current sponsor will approve a transfer, and it does not prove the job title on the residence matches the new role. The new employer still needs official paperwork. OnKuwait does not process transfers and does not pay government fees.
If an ad says “any visa”, they may accept a family residence or another type for part-time hours. Ask in the first message: is a transfer required, and is the job full-time?
If you are looking for work
- Read whether the ad is for people already in Kuwait or for overseas hire.
- Do not pay someone who promises to “fix your 18” for a fee.
- Do not hand over your original passport in a café before you have seen the workplace.
- If your current contract blocks a transfer, say so early so you do not waste interviews.
If you are hiring
Write it plainly: do you want a candidate already in Kuwait? Will you help with transfer steps? Are room or meals part of pay? Vague ads attract the wrong messages, get reported, or sit with no useful replies.
Do not ask applicants to pay residence costs. Ads that charge job seekers are removed.
Rules change
Residence and transfer rules change. Check the Ministry of Interior, nationality and passport affairs, and the Public Authority for Manpower — or a licensed accountant or lawyer. This page only explains wording on some OnKuwait ads. The board itself is for people who live in Kuwait.
