Live-in and live-out household work in Kuwait
Maid, nanny, cook, part-time cleaner. The title is less important than whether you sleep in the house, who has the passport, and what Friday looks like. OnKuwait is not an agency. This page is how to read the ad anyway.
Live-out is a different life
Live-out in Qurtoba or Salmiya means you go home. The hours should have a start and a finish. Three days a week is not six days because “the house got busy”. Ask about overtime before the first busy week, not after it. You should know if transport is yours or theirs at 8 p.m.
Live-in means your rest is inside someone else’s walls. Ask if the room is yours, if it has a door that shuts, and who else has a key. Ask about phone use, about leaving on Friday, about whether you eat the same food or leftovers. None of this is rude. It is the job.
Nanny is not maid is not cook
If the ad is a nanny for two children in Sabah Al Salem, the work is children. Extra floors and windows will appear unless the listing says they will not. Get the extra in the chat. If the ad is a cook in Firdous, ask whose recipes and whether you also clean. “Help in the house” without a list is how a 12-hour day grows in silence.
Part-time cleaner should name the days. “When we call” is not part-time. It is on-call with a part-time salary. You can still take it. You should not be surprised by it.
Money, passports, brokers
Do not send dinars to reserve a bed, open a file, or “hold the visa”. A household that exists can meet you without a transfer. If WhatsApp wants Western Union, it is not a house. Report the listing.
Original passports stay with the person they belong to unless the law and a proper process say otherwise — that process is not a stranger in a mall food court. We are not a ministry. We will still take down ads that demand money from workers. We will not retrieve a booklet you already handed over in a car. Do not hand it over in a car.
OnKuwait does not run a maid office. We do not fly people in. Overseas hire, when it is real, is written on the ad and goes through official channels. An Instagram story that promises a room in Kuwait next week in exchange for a deposit is the opposite of that.
Meetings that are safe enough
Meet in daylight. A building lobby, a co-op, a café on a main road. Take a friend if you can. If they insist the only option is a closed apartment with the door locked, leave. A real family can still talk in a public place for twenty minutes before anyone sees a bedroom.
Women-only language in an ad does not automatically make the interview safe. It makes the workplace intended as women-only. The path to that workplace still has to be a path you can walk back from.
Write it down before day one
Salary, rest day, live-in or live-out, room, food, and whether you also look after children. Put it on WhatsApp. Memory favours the house. If they refuse to write anything, that is information. Apply through the OnKuwait listing so the ad you accepted is the ad we have, not a rewritten story in a group chat.
If the work turns into something the ad never said, you can leave and you can report. We can remove a listing. We cannot stand in the kitchen with you. Official labour questions go to the proper offices. This page is only how the ads on this board tend to behave, and how not to pay for the privilege of being tired.
What the domestic cards on OnKuwait usually are
Most household ads we publish are already-in-Kuwait roles: a live-out cleaner three days in Salmiya, a nanny who goes home, a cook who already knows a Kuwaiti lunch. Live-in ads exist. They should read like a house, not like an airport. If the only next step is a fee, it is not a house.
Families sometimes reuse last year’s text. A part-time afternoon in Qurtoba may still be open if you live out and the hours fit. Say live-out in the first line so they do not assume a suitcase in the hall.
Citizens take some of these hours — after-school help, a few cleaning mornings — and skip most live-in posts. That is normal. The category is mixed. Do not assume every card wants the same kind of person and the same bed.
If a listing moves from a named area to “we will tell you after you pay”, report it. If two ads from different names share the same WhatsApp and the same salary fantasy, report both. We would rather take a duplicate down than leave a trap with a new heading.
OnKuwait will not visit the villa for you. We will not hold your passport. We will not argue with the aunt about Friday. We will keep the public ad honest enough that the first conversation can happen in daylight. The rest is your judgment and, when needed, the official desks — not a broker who wants a deposit tonight. A lobby or a co-op in daylight is a meeting. A locked flat with the story changing is your cue to leave. If they will not write salary and Friday in the chat, believe the silence. Original passports do not go “just for tonight”. If the public listing is gone in the morning and only a private number remains, treat the house as gone too. Live-out hours should still have a finish time; “we will see” is how a three-day cleaner becomes six unpaid evenings. Write the finish time before day one. Then keep that chat until Friday so the story cannot quietly change. Keep that WhatsApp thread.
